How to Make a Rock Garden

Using Fieldstones And Plants In Your Landscape

Everybody knows that fieldstone is a great material for home and commercial projects. You can use our beautiful stones, which we recover from the surface of fields, or remove from underneath the soil, for your steps, exterior veneers, fireplaces, outdoor grills, and much, much more.

But did you know that our fieldstones can also make your garden rock? Fieldstones make terrific rockeries, which is just a fancy word for rock gardens.

Traditional rockeries are planted with alpine plants, which grow in high elevations, and prefer dry soils and low temperatures. That’s not a good fit for our hot, humid weather in the Southeast!

You can still have a fabulous rock garden by using plants that are suited to our climate. Here are a few suggestions from the North American Rock Garden Society to get you started:

  • Narcissus
  • Crocus
  • Sedum
  • Cyclamen
  • Ice plants (Delosperma spp.)
  • Dianthus
  • Candytuft
  • Small iris

Of course, you can use any other kinds of plants you like. Just provide good drainage and locate your rockery near a source of water, in case rainfall gets scarce. You can plant in sun or shade, depending on the kinds of plants you use.

Where should you locate your rock garden? Slopes are great places, where rocks can help control erosion and hide otherwise bare ground. We can help you find fieldstones with interesting shapes, colors, and distinct lines, or strata, to make your garden look as if Mother Nature designed it. The most attractive rock gardens look like they belong in your landscape or yard, so aim for a natural setting, and let them blend in with any existing stones or rocks that are already in place.
