Mulching is a great and easy way to improve the appearance and health of your landscaping.  Last week, we went over some of the mulch basics: what mulch actually is made of, reasons to use mulch, and how to decide which mulch to use.  This week, we will be talking about how to use mulch effectively – which is actually one of our most frequently asked questions.

Before you begin to lay down your mulch, you are going to want to prepare the ground by first cleaning up any summer mulch and pulling up any and all weeds.  Leftover mulch can rot inviting rodents and disease.  If you have a major weed problem, it can be beneficial to lay damp newspaper over the ground before you apply the layer of mulch.  It has become a common practice to use newspaper to prohibit weeds from sprouting up through the mulch.  You can read one organic farmer’s success story here.  But we have read that it is recommended to only use the black and white portions of print in your gardens, rather than colored inks, or glossy paper – due to the use of heavy metals in those inks.  So you may want to keep that in mind when using newspaper in your garden.  If your soil is dry, you also want to water it before laying down the mulch.

After you have prepared the ground, you will apply 2-4 inches of loose mulch.  When spreading mulch around plants or trees, leave an inch or two between the plant/tree and the mulch.  It is recommended for fall mulching to wait until the ground is frozen or near frozen. The mulch will help the soil maintain a more even-temperature, rather than the back and forth it can experience during these cold months.

As you can see, mulching is a very simple process.  Once you have cleaned up old mulch and pulled up any weeds, it’s a very straightforward and timely task.  We wish you all the luck in your fall mulching projects – and if you would like any more lanscaping  information, tips, or pricing on the mulch we offer, give us a call at 770-252-6336.  You can also join us on Facebook or Twitter where we offer even more valuable advice and tips.
